April 30th, 2024. Assembly

The grade ones are having an assembly next Friday at 10:30 to share their learning about spring, plants and the Earth. Guests will be able to enter the school to watch at 10:15. Each student will have an opportunity to sing a few songs and some students will be playing instruments, acting, or speaking during the assembly.  Ask your child what they are going to be doing.  If your child is going to be speaking, they will have brought home a 'script' to practice over the next week.  We ask that they bring it to school, daily, so they have it when we are practicing.

In math we are finalizing our understanding of addition and using the strategies we have been learning like making 10 and using doubles to solve basic facts and word problems.

In science we are beginning to research an animal together and then using the information we found to create jot notes when recording what we learned. Some of the headings we are focusing on are habitat/home, diet/food, babies/young, appearance, and enemies/predators.

Wilder Institute – Burrowing Owl Conservation

As participants in the Conservation Champions Festival with the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo, the grade 3 students in Mrs. Moravec’s and Mrs. Price’s classes, have chosen to support and educate others on the burrowing owl.

Copperfield School will be collecting donations starting on April 22nd through April 26th 2024 to raise money for the “Head Starting Program” that is aimed at caring for and protecting burrowing owlets until they are stronger, and able to be released safely into the wild as adults. Our hope is that we will be able to raise over a thousand dollars towards this program.

For every $2 donation, your child will earn a classroom ballot. After the fundraiser is over, we will draw a ballot and the winning class will get the opportunity to play a game of dodgeball vs. the teachers and staff of Copperfield! The more toonies your class brings in, the more ballots your class gets, and the more ballots your class gets, the better the chances of your class winning the opportunity to play dodgeball against the teachers!

April 22nd, 2024

Today is Earth Day and our classes spent time talking about different ways we can take care of the earth. We learned more about recycling, reducing, and reusing. Students learned about the importance of clean water, the dangers of trash, broken bottles etc. and then wrote to Na'a (Mother Earth) and made a promise to take action to protect her. Ask your child what they are going to do to take care of her.

We also used tissue paper to create a collage of blues and greens to represent the earth in art. Ask your child to tell you what was challenging about this project.

As both of our classes are practicing for the grade one assembly on May 10th we are having our music classes together to begin practicing. Students will have an opportunity to play an instrument, speak, act or MC during this assembly.  More information will follow. Due to us having music tomorrow, Mrs. Brice's class will not have library until Thursday with Mrs. Bredahl's class. Your child can still return their library books before that if you wish.

Our trip to Heritage Park was a lot of fun and the students have been writing about their favourite parts of the field trip. The bus ride, the one room school house, making patterns, and visiting many different buildings were some of the more popular choices. You can see an example of their writing below.

We are finishing up our learning about urban and rural communities and students combined art and social studies to show their understanding of these communities.  An example of these are below. Ask your child what they put in their picture and how they can tell if a community is rural or urban.

In math we continue to work on our strategies for solving basic facts.  We are getting very good at solving 10+ and 9+ equations and are now working on remembering our doubles facts by connecting them to items we are familiar with.  Ask your child how they remember 6+6= or 9+9=, or any of the doubles facts to 20.

To represent the different strategies we have been learning about in our wellness unit, to help us when we are in a zone that is stopping us from learning our best, students created a toolbox and put 3-4 strategies that they think work well to help them regulate their feelings and help them get into the green zone where they can focus and feel good about their learning. Ask your child what 'tools' they put in their tool box that they can also use at home if they are upset or feeling down.

April 11th, 2024

We had a wonderful time on our field trip today and the students learned a lot about how life was different than what they know today.  Ask your child what they learned about school 100 years ago and what their favourite part of the day was.  We will be doing some writing about this tomorrow so any ideas they can come up with tonight will help tomorrow.

Your child is also coming home with a  free one day pass that can be used any time that the park is open for this year's season.

April 10th, 2024

Reminder that tomorrow we are on our field trip to Heritage Park. The weather looks like it is going to cooperate and the other grade one classes, who were there today, said it is quite dry so regular shoes will be fine.  We will be outside for most of the morning so your child will need to have a warm jacket, mitts etc. so they are comfortable.

We have been watching the National Film Board's short videos on 'Early Life in Canada' and we are learning about how a one room school house was built, what early homes and villages looked like and how our school is different than a one room school house from long ago. We will have more experience with a one room school house tomorrow.

Please remember to have your child draw the picture that matches with the text in the blue duo tangs as we are looking to see the students' understanding of what they read.  When all of the pages in the duo tang are complete with picture drawn, we will send home some books that match your child's reading ability.

In math we have been working on solidifying our understanding of counting by 10, 10+7=17 and then using this understanding to solve 9+7=.  We are now building strategies to solve basic facts within 20 and will begin using our doubles to solve equations such as 4+4= and 9+9= next week.  These are skills you can practice in the car, before bed, while making dinner etc. to help your child's confidence with their solving of math problems over the next few months.

An email has been sent to you through School Messanger for our April 11th field trip.  Please read it so your child can have a successful experience.

Our in-line skating has finished for this year and the students all made wonderful progress. Thank you to our parent council for this opportunity.

April 2nd, 2024

Welcome back!

Your child's spring photos are coming home today. Please check their backpack.

Mrs. Brice's class had fun in inline skating today and found they were making progress and building resilience. Many students left their helmets at school as they have it again on Thursday. Mrs Bredahl's class has their last lesson on Thursday as well.

We will be sending home new reading passages in your child's blue duo tang this week. These are passages that practice the VCE (vowel, consonant, e) patterns that we were targeting before the break and are reviewing this week.   When your child returns their duo tang we check to see if they have read and drawn a picture to match the text.  This way we can check their comprehension.  If your child has not read and drawn a picture for the pages in their duo tang we will not be sending home books to read as the pages in their duo tang are exactly at the place we need them to practice as we move on to new skills and these readings are priority over books.

Please print and return your child's permission forms, for our field trip next Wednesday, as we need them in order for them to attend. These were emailed out before the break. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Today in social studies we began learning about rural and urban communities.  Students learned that Calgary is an urban community and has lots of traffic, buildings, stores, people etc.  Rural communities have lots of open land, more animals, less people, traffic and buildings.

Tomorrow our classes will be having a small party to celebrate our time together.  Mrs. Brice's  class will be having a PJ and stuffy da...
