For the past week, students have been working hard to show their understanding of their reading and writing skills. Yesterday we had students read a new text, similar to the ones sent home in their yellow duo tang. They were expected to read the text three times to build fluency in their reading and then they drew pictures to represent their understanding. We were very impressed with the effort that was put into this task and let the students know how amazing they are doing. We also did a spelling check in to see how well they remember writing each sound that they hear in the given words. Students are getting very good at tapping with their fingers, each sound they hear in a given word. The word 'belt' is tapped as b.e.l.t. Again, students did a very good job of recording the sounds they are hearing. All of these skills are helping to build confidence and skills for both reading and writing. You can see some of the different ways students represent their learning below.
In math we are continuing to work on addition. Students have used number lines, counters, and power of ten cards to help them recognize how to count on when beginning with one number and then adding more items. In grade one we call an equation (3+4=7), a number sentence. We have talked about it having a beginning (the number we start with), a middle (what happens in the middle) and the end (what we have when we put the items together).
We have been reviewing our emotions and what those can look like. Students know that all emotions are ok but that sometimes our big behaviours are better in a quiet place rather than where it can disrupt others. Ask your child what emotions they are learning about.
We are almost done with the literacy and math assessments required by the government and the students have had a positive attitude and seem to be feeling good about them.
