February 1st, 2024

In our science this week we have been doing more inquiry into how snow is formed and the characteristics of a snowflake.  Knowing that all snow crystals begin with a speck of something in the air and start to form with six branches that are almost identical, helped us to create our own 'snow crystals' using pattern blocks.   Students began with a hexagon shape and built six branches using a variety of shapes.  This allowed us to tie our science unit into our math unit and we talked about 2D and 3D shapes.  We learned that while we were using 3D pattern blocks to build our pictures of 'snow crystals', when we looked at them from above or as a photograph, we could see the 2D shapes which are flat and cannot be held. You can see some of the creative 'snow crystals' below.

In math we have finished our introduction to addition and subtraction and we will be moving on to our unit on numbers to 100.  This ties in well to our 100th day of school, coming up in February.  You can have your child practice adding and subtracting numbers up to 20 to build confidence for when we return to it in March when we learn how to use strategies to solve word problems and basic facts.
