February 13th, 2022

Reminder that tomorrow we will be celebrating Valentine's Day in our classrooms in the afternoon.  If your child would like to participate they are asked to bring in 22 valentines for their classmates with only their own name signed on them.  If they would like to send a few to friends in the other classes we will work hard to find time to do that. As we will have a small 'party' in the afternoon, students can bring in a special snack to eat in the afternoon.  Some students will have their fun snack cookie that was ordered through Healthy Hunger and they could save it or you could send another snack for your child only if you would like. 

For the month of February, we have been talking a lot about kindness and love.  Yesterday Mr. Patry read the story 'Flight of the Hummingbird' by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas. It was a a story about a hummingbird who was doing "what I can" to help during a great fire, even though it did not seem like his efforts would make a difference. Today we worked with our buddies to create cards to send to a senior's home to let them know we are thinking about them and we care. 

Today we also painted the hearts we made out of clay last week and we will be firing these in the kiln tomorrow. We will be using these hearts in our lessons during the rest of this month of kindness.

*** Your child no longer needs to bring their yellow duo tangs to school. We are finished with them and students can keep them at home to read familiar text. We are sending home a new, blue duo tang this week with three pages of text in it.  The text in there for this week are the lessons we are working on this week in class, the ng and nk sounds. For the past two weeks we have been learning about digraphs (two consonants that make one sound or phoneme). We have learned about sh, ch, th, ck, ph and wh. This week we are learning about ng, and nk.   Students should be able to read through most of the text as many of the irregular (words we learn by heart) words in the text are words we have already learned. Please return the blue duo tang each day as we will be updating the text based on the skills we will be targeting so student have access to text that helps them practice what we are learning.
