Reminder that tomorrow is library for both classes.
Reminder that there is no school for students on Friday as teachers have a PD day.
Today we had a discussion with the students about their home reading. We are finding that when we check in with them in the morning to see how the books were, many are having trouble reading the books back to us or haven't read them. These books are chosen based on the sounds and skills we have been learning and students should be able to sound out most of the words. We expect students to reread the books 3 times. We read them once to decode the words, then we read again to build fluency and to listen to what is happening in the text. The third time is to solidify what is happening in the text so they can retell it in their own words. Some students are bringing home books past the sounds we have been learning as they can read more complex text. If your child has trouble with diagraphs (ch, sh, th, ph) we won't learn those until later in the year but you could introduce the sounds as they are ready for them. That goes for word families such as 'ight' and ear, air, ure, etc.
Our tradition presentations are going very well and students are engaged and interested in learning about other traditions, celebrations and cultures. For the past three days we have learned about Ramadan and Eid, Diwali, New Years Eve in Brazil and Canada, Albanian Independence Day, Chinese New Year, and Global Fest. Many of these celebrations involve fireworks and lights, as well as, celebrating with family and friends and enjoying feasts, so we were able to make a lot connections.
We are continuing to collect items for the Mustard Seed.
Our Winter Concert is next Wednesday night and the doors open at 5:30.
