Reminder that we have parent/teacher conferences this Thursday and Friday. Please sign up as we would love to share your child's learning and share some important information that will be coming up. Due to conferences on Friday, we will not have regular school for students.
Today students played a fun game with a peer to practice identifying their vowel sounds. This is something that can be tricky when reading, but especially when spelling when writing. The students had a fun time trying to grab the correct card with the vowel sound that was made, before their peer. You can see some pictures of this below.
Today we added some new poems to your child's yellow duo tang. They are very familiar with the autumn poem and should be able to share some of the reading rules and strategies they learned with it. One of the pages has a large white rectangle at the top. These reading texts are used in class to check for comprehension. We read the text 3 times. The first time is to sound or the words, the second time is to read it more fluently and see what is happening in the text. The last time is to check for understanding. Once they are familiar with what they have been reading, they are to draw a picture of what they read to demonstrate their understanding. You can have your child read the new passage 3 times and then draw a picture. We will be doing this tomorrow as an assessment of their reading skills so this is a great way to have them practice. The text they read tomorrow will be a new text so they will need to use the read 3 times strategy to help them with the new text tomorrow.
In math we are also doing an assessment of their understanding of teen numbers. We have built teen numbers with cubes, coloured them on paper and represented them in a variety of ways. Ask your child to tell you what they know about all teen numbers. They should say that all teen numbers have 1 ten in them.
