June 19th, 2024

As we are beginning to wind down for the year, students are working hard to finish up their spring assessment that shows all of the ways people, plants and animals adapt and behave in the spring.  Ask your child what animals and plants are doing in the spring. See below for an example.

We have been learning a lot from Elder Shirley and students used their understanding to show the different types of animals and plants observed to make a picture to represent the Circle of Life.

In our math unit, students used toothpicks and plasticine to build 3D shapes so they could recognize and count the faces, edges, and points (vertices).  Ask your child to tell you what 3D shapes they built and what different 3D shapes they have been learning about.

Request for Recycled Items

On Monday June 24th our classes will be building different landmarks that we can find in Calgary.  This ties in to our social studies curriculum about our community and will allow the students to use their understanding of 3-D shapes to replicate important structures that they see around them in our city.

****We will need a variety of recyclable materials such as small to medium sized boxes (granola bars, cereal), plastics such as clean yogurt/ fruit containers, paper towel rolls, clean take out plastic containers, etc.

Ask your child to tell you about Elder Shirley and Lemon.  Yesterday we were learning about Hoop Dancing and had the opportunity to practice using a hoop to move and dance. Have your child tell you what their favourite part of having Elder Shirley working with us has been.

June 10th Father's Day Request

***We are getting ready for Father's Day and are asking each child to send in a small ring/jewelry  sized box by Thursday, if you have one.  We will be using a small box for our gift for dad.  If you have an extra one to send it, it would be appreciated in case not everyone has one to bring in.  These can be small cubed sized or flatter necklace sized.  The shape does not matter. We will be making our gift on Thursday.

Today was the last library day for Mrs. Brice's class and Mrs. Burt's class will have their last day on Thursday.  Please return any overdue books as soon as possible.

We are also looking or volunteers for our activity day on the last day of school.  We will spend the morning inside and outside of the school participating in a variety of activities.  We need volunteers to run the stations and we will let you know what station you will be at and we will organize all of the materials so you will just need to be manning the station.  If you can volunteer for the morning of June 27th, please let us know.

June 5th

Over the past few weeks students have been listening to and writing fairy tales.  We are learning that many of them begin with 'Once upon a time' and have animals as the characters. We also noticed that things happen in threes, three animals, three attempts to solve the problem, etc.  When writing our own fairy tales, we used our understanding of fairy tales to help us create a simple story.  Ask your child what their fairy tale is about, what the characters are and what the problem is.  You can see a couple examples below.

We were fortunate to welcome Elder Shirley to Copperfield School as an artist in residence today. She spent an hour with our classes sharing knowledge about the Circle of Life, the Blackfoot calendar, which uses 13 months that follow the moon, and introduced us to Lemon.  Ask your child who Lemon is and what they learned from Elder Shirley.

Yesterday was a wonderful day for the zoo.  Students were excited to share their learning and favourite parts today in class.  They worked hard to share what they liked and didn't, what animals they saw by adding details, and what they learned.  Ask your child what their favourite part was. Some writing samples are above.

Today in class we had a pre assessment for our adding and subtracting unit using fact families.  Students did good job of creating two addition and two subtraction equations out of three numbers, for example, 7, 4, and 3 were used to make 4+3=7, 3+4=7, 7-4=3, and 7-3=4.  Continuing to practice this at home will help solidify the skills they will use to help them solve similar equations with larger numbers in the future.
